ANNIE NATHAN MEYER
"Are you a good person?"

Annie Nathan Meyer was born in New York in 1867. She is well known for founding Barnard College, a private women’s college, as part of her goal to promote higher education for women. As a Jewish American, she sought to help other Jewish women as well as Black women gain educational opportunities by helping them gain proper funds to enter college. Meyer was even called upon by the NAACP to help resolve conflicts between Black and Jewish people. One thing that continues to humor historians is that her sister, Maud Nathan, was a prominent suffragette, and her views directly contradicted those expressed by her sister.
