ROSE CECIL O'NEILL

"Art is activism"

Rose Cecil O’Neill (1874-1944) was an illustrator, businesswoman, writer, philanthropist, and suffragist. O’Neill taught herself art when she was just a child, and by 1896, she was hailed “Americas’ First Female Cartoonist.” O’Neill became a sought-after cartoonist, illustrator, poet, and short story writer. Her works appeared in over fifty magazines, while her illustrations graced the cover of sixty national publications. Known to the National Women’s Suffrage Association in New York City as a “Suffrage Artist,” O’Neill lent her creative abilities to the cause of advancing women’s rights and used her art as a forum to comment on many social issues involving discrimination and inequality against women.
